چکیده

Putkonen and Rehtijarvi (1950) published the results of a study on the Herxheimer reaction in early infectious syphilis. It was found that the febrile Herxheimer reaction occurs with different frequency and intensity at different stages of early syphilis and is practically absent at the latent stage of the disease. Because the number of cases of primary syphilis was rather small, the collection of data was continued. The accumulation of patients was slow until 1963 when early syphilis began to increase in Finland. This increase has made it possible for us to report on the results of a larger series of cases of primary and secondary syphilis.

Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction in the treatment of early syphilis with penicillin and bismuth-arsphenamine.

Penicillin therapy has revived interest in the complex of focal and systemic manifestations which is known as the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (JHR). Some of the views on the JHR from the mercurybismuth-arsphenamine era have had to be altered. In this respect attention should be called to the investigations of Farmer (1948) on the relationship between the JHR and the dose of penicillin, which re...

The enigma of the pathogenesis of the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction.

The pathophysiological mechanisms of the JarischHerxheimer reaction (JHR) have remained obscure since its original recognition. In light of the many recent advances in various areas of immunobiology it is felt that the JHR merits brief review and reevaluation of pathogenesis. The JHR was first described in 1895 by Jarisch and in 1902 by Herxheimer and Krause as a transient exacerbation in the a...

Changes in intravascular complement, kininogen, and histamine during Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction in secondary syphilis.

Nine patients with secondary syphilis and one control subject were observed for eight hours after the administration of penicillin. Serial clinical observations were made, and blood samples were obtained for the analysis of complement, histamine, and kininogen. Six patients showed Jarisch-Herxheimer reactions, the intensities of which were found to parallel certain changes in activity of comple...

Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction among HIV-positive patients with early syphilis: azithromycin versus benzathine penicillin G therapy

INTRODUCTION The Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, a febrile inflammatory reaction that often occurs after the first dose of chemotherapy in spirochetal diseases, may result in deleterious effects to patients with neurosyphilis and to pregnant women. A single 2-g oral dose of azithromycin is an alternative treatment to benzathine penicillin G for early syphilis in areas with low macrolide resistance...
